YIVO is dedicated to fostering knowledge of the ongoing story of Jewish life with a focus on the history and culture of east European Jewry. It is a research institute, an institution of higher learning, an adult education organization, a cultural organization, and a world-renowned library and archives.

Looking for a New Software Solution

YIVO was using a dated platform for its fundraising and needed a solution that would streamline email campaigns, help with the planning and execution of events, and make online fundraising easier for donors. It also needed a solution that would integrate with Raiser’s Edge™.

YIVO selected Luminate Online™ as its new fundraising platform with GO!™ training to help it get up and running. With Go! training, the staff at YIVO was able to learn best practices in marketing and fundraising.

New Campaigns, New Supporters

After implementing Luminate Online, YIVO created a campaign consisting of a series of emails that invited readers to take a quiz on Yiddish. The staff at YIVO worked with Dr. Eddy Portnoy, the organization’s internal expert, and created a fun quiz about Yiddish swear words.

Participants who took the quiz were asked to share their results online which attracted hundreds more to the campaign. At the end of the campaign, YIVO invited participants to see its exhibit and raffled a poster of the Yiddish Fight Club as a prize for participating.

Moving Forward

The goal of the campaign was to expand YIVO’s reach and acquire new prospects. The campaign was a huge success and reached nearly 12,000 people. Open rates were 27.2%, click-through rates were 10%, action rates were 3%, and the organization acquired almost 300 new email subscribers.

The formula used for developing the campaign will be mirrored for others going forward. Already YIVO has implemented similar campaigns, including a sustainer campaign which resulted in 16 new sustainers. In January, YIVO will host an online class on Yiddish and already has 800 people signed up.
