Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Austin and Central Texas Maximizes Reach and Revenue with Blackbaud's Peer-to-Peer Solutions

Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of Austin and Central Texas creates, finds, and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of critically ill children and their families. Each day, families with ill and injured children rely on RMHC to provide support while their little ones receive treatment. During incredibly difficult times, Ronald McDonald House® provides the comfort of home away from home for these families. Through Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room® programs, RMHC of Austin and Central Texas has served the area for nearly 30 years. They currently help more than 1,700 families a year.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Austin and Central Texas needed an integrated system that could manage database, fundraising, and communication needs. They were looking for a peer-to-peer solution to help with their annual event — the Lights of Love 5K and Family Fun Run, a nighttime family-friendly 5K event with both an athletic and festival atmosphere. RMHC of Austin and Central Texas started this event in 2008 and needed an online solution for runner registration and personalized fundraising.

After looking at several other peer-to-peer solutions, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Austin and Central Texas found there was no comparison to those offered by Blackbaud, which would integrate with other Blackbaud solutions already being used for the organization’s web platform, mobile web platform, donor and volunteer database, and house and family room referrals and registrations. In addition, Blackbaud peer-to-peer solutions allowed RMHC of Austin and Central Texas to expand the opportunity for runners and walkers to participate in honor or memory of loved ones.

By using Blackbaud peer-to-peer solutions, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Austin and Central Texas was able to expand from the participant-only model to include teams and individual fundraisers. The event now raises a third of its revenue from peer-to-peer fundraising and went from raising $50,000 in the first year to raising more than $250,000 in the fifth year. Participation has grown from 400 individuals to more than 3,000 over those five years as well. Individual and team fundraising contributes more than $100,000 in donations, and RMHC of Austin and Central Texas is able to focus on identifying larger potential donors from peer-to-peer campaigns, helping to support future growth. Compared to the steadily increasing donations and huge impact on the Lights of Love 5k, Blackbaud was well worth the investment.
