Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ mission is to further the understanding and appreciation of plant life, with an emphasis on epiphytes, and to provide enjoyment for all who visit the Gardens. The Gardens places strong emphasis on scientific research, education, horticultural display, and conservation. Since the Garden opened on July 7, 1975, the property has expanded to nearly 14 acres. Selby Gardens delights more than 130,000 visitors each year and is the leader in the study, conservation, and display of epiphytes and their canopy habitats.


Marie Selby Botanical Gardens struggled with data purity issues caused by staff changes, the lack of clear data entry and collection processes, and feedback loops.

Its back office processes were time- consuming and did not provide a well- rounded view of constituents.

Web transactions were not in real-time and led the Gardens to often close registration 24 hours prior to an event in order to give staff time to process the list, download data, and then import the list into some- thing manageable for admissions staff.


After a thorough review of several systems, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens selected AltruTM by Blackbaud to meet its varying needs including database and develop- ment, events management, ticketing, membership and volunteer management.

This ability has led the organization to establish a strategy to increase member- ship renewal for first time members, while providing the finance department accurate and timely reporting.
