Kansas Children’s Discovery Center Selects Altru to Build a 360-degree View of its Operations and Constituents

Located on the far southwest corner of Gage Park at 10th and Westchester in Topeka, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will inspire and encourage discovery and exploration for children on all ages. Scheduled to open in June 2011, the Center will have exhibit areas that emphasize math, science and the arts that are designed to encourage both critical and creative thinking, as well as promote physical and gross-motor activity. With programming and exhibits that align with the Kansas curriculum objectives, the Discovery Center will be a resource for educators and provide an economical field trip for students in northeast Kansas.

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center was using Excel to track its constituent information and wouldn’t be able to continue using this method once the facility opened.

The Center needed a solution to address its various facility, event, and admission needs.

Additionally, the executive director did not want multiple systems for each function. She wanted a system that would work across the organization and across various functions.

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center selected Altru by Blackbaud because it is one system that will address all its needs including ticketing, events, calendar, gift shop and fundraising.

Altru by Blackbaud provides the Kansas Children’s Center with the robust fund- raising capabilities it needs to cultivate, track and engage members, visitors, and donors.

Additionally, Altru will provide the Center with the level of constituent detail to better engage its members, visitors and donors.

Kansas Children’s Discovery Center looks forward to using Altru to give a holistic view of museum activities across departments.

The executive director, Joanne Morrell, is also excited about the upcoming accounting portion and looks forward to utilizing Altru to manage fundraising, its gift shop, special events, birthday parties, facility rentals, and many more.

With Altru, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will be able to know when a board member, major donor or trial member walks into the facility. With this information available in real-time, the Museum staff can provide the extra attention needed to specific individuals.

Because Altru is a web-based solution, staff at Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will be able to access the data and work from anywhere with an Internet connection. Additionally, the Center will not have to worry about backing up its data or software updates. Blackbaud will take care of it.
